Here is a short 10 minute video on the hand built bicycle. Rather well done with bikes from Vanilla, ANT, Sachs, and Jones.

Enjoy,

Paris-Roubaix 2011 and the possibility of another dope bike

I am looking forward to the Paris-Roubaix this year for one reason. A dope bike.

Last year there was some contraversy over a certain riders ability to completely out ride the other racers. It was claimed that this rider had a secret.

His bike was an ELECTRIC BIKE!  And he won because of it.

As you may guess the cyclo-sphere ate the story up. Partly because it was funny I think. It had all the elements of a bad conspiracy theory. Even video to ‘prove’ it.

The reason I liked the story was that it brought to my attention the possiblity of an electric motor that sits in the seat tube.  Personally I think the ability to have that in a bike would be pretty darn cool.  I can imagine on myself commuting to work and being tired from family life and just hitting the power button and getting there a wee bit faster. I also imagine it as a way to get more people on these contraptions I love.

Here are the videos and motor information below. I look forward to seeing the dope bike come out again this year.

By the way: the Paris-Roubaix is scheduled for April 10th, and will probably be streaming somewhere on the internet.

Here is the conspiracy video:

Another:

I believe that this one above is poking fun at the situation.

And one more because it shows the power of this little gadget:

Finally, the company that builds the motor is named GRUBER Antrieb GmbH & Co KG. They are in Austria and Germany. They are geniuses if you ask me.  I want to get a bike and ship it to them to retrofit it. All in good time I guess.

Here is the CAD mock up of the motor attached to a Shimano XTR crankset.

Here is a tech video of their product.

It is that time of year again.

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show has been around since about 2005.  Each year it showcases the best of the best of bicycle frame builders.  If you want a custom bike, these are the guys that you want doing it.  Like a great tattoo artists, these guys and gals should be looked up to in our sport.  Some time their ideas are pretty wacky, but the soul of the sport is there, and I love watching what they are bringing to the sport.

There are a ton of blogs and twitter feeds that are in Austin following the action so I will not rehash the same old same old.  I will just be periodically dropping updates on things that I find interesting.

Have fun,
Jeremy

Here are some cool things so far:

From BikePortland.org
This is a tall bike from Calfee.  Why would you need a carbon/bamboo tall bike? Because it’s there that’s why.

Austin Day 1-25

Here are some VERY pretty chain tensioners from Vertigo Cycles
Click on the link to goto bikerumor.com for more info.  I contacted Vertigo about getting a set of these for my bike, I can’t wait till they go into production.

If you are thinking they IPO’d and you are going to make millions of clams off of a web 2.0 startup you are in the wrong area of the web.

Sometimes selling things on craigslist or ebay is a pain with the scammers and Nigerians.  Pedalr is an attempt to make it easier.  So far I have been pretty happy with it.

I  got in on the beta of pedalr.com a couple weeks ago and really loved the flow through the site.  It is simple and fast, plus you can tell the people behind it really want to make a great site for cyclists to sell items.  They are also taking it slow and trying to get everything right.  So the site is still in a Beta state, but now you can join to.

You can find my profile here. Check them out and let met know what you think.
