Happy Anniversary: Me and Cancer

Thursday April 13th 2006 before sunrise.

My family and I headed to the hospital to drop me off for a major estimated 18 hour surgery to remove a tumour the size of a baseball in my left sinus.

4-5 days later I woke up in a lot of pain and a lot of tubes sticking out of me.  I was in the hospital for about 3 weeks.  I don’t remember much as I was on some heavy drugs.

I consider that a new birth of sorts.  The old Jeremy passed on that day and  every day since has been icing on the cake of life. Yes, even the days at the mundane job.

We have done a lot in these last 4 years, and I am excited to see where we go from here.

I can not live an ordinary life now since I am an extraordinary guy ;)

PS If you or anyone you know has Cancer or is going through the process and you or them need to chat or have questions shoot me an email and I can help.

Summer training update

Man…This is hard!

How do you balance the work/home life with the drive to get into better health? The Outside Mag
article writer must have had no wife or kids.

I’ve restarted the training again, because we had guests this month and it was a little difficult to manage the training schedule. The cool thing is I’ve got a base down so moving up from there should be easier.

Summer training

I am trying a new 12 week work out schedule. It will be out in the new Outside magazine this month. It is a basic training schedule for a triathlon [swim, bike, run]. I am trying this because I have the resources now since it is summer and I always feel the need to get in better shape. It must be from having cancer and not wanting to go back through it again. Also I am a little competitive, and love beating people in sports.

I will be using a new weblog located here to mark my progress.

Have fun,

J

Study holds new promise for patients recovering from spinal injuries

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Spinal cord damage blocks the routes the brain uses to send messages to the nerve cells that control walking. For years, doctors believed that the only way injured patients could walk again was to regrow the long nerve highways that link the brain and base of the spinal cord.

Now, for the first time, a UCLA study shows that the central nervous system can reorganize itself and follow new pathways to restore the cellular communication required for movement.

The discovery, published in the January edition of the journal Nature Medicine, could lead to new therapies for the estimated 250,000 Americans who suffer from traumatic spinal cord injuries. An additional 10,000 cases occur each year, according to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which helped fund the UCLA study.

Well Happy new year!

Time for resolutions for the upcoming year.

I just bought a new trainer from my Christmas money.

Nashbar Trainer

My resolution is to train and compete in the Kokopelli Trail Race for 2008. It is a unsupported solo endurance race from Fruita, CO to Moab, UT along the Kokopelli Trail. The record is about 12 Hours, but I just want to finish it.

I do not have details yet on the date, but I thought it was in May sometime.

A trail description can be found on the following links:

There will be a fun “race” on Dec 22 2007. it is really more of an excuse to drink beer and hang out with other cyclists. Which is what a “race” should be. Hope to see you there.
