Paris-Roubaix 2011 and the possibility of another dope bike
Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011I am looking forward to the Paris-Roubaix this year for one reason. A dope bike.
Last year there was some contraversy over a certain riders ability to completely out ride the other racers. It was claimed that this rider had a secret.
His bike was an ELECTRIC BIKE! And he won because of it.
As you may guess the cyclo-sphere ate the story up. Partly because it was funny I think. It had all the elements of a bad conspiracy theory. Even video to ‘prove’ it.
The reason I liked the story was that it brought to my attention the possiblity of an electric motor that sits in the seat tube. Personally I think the ability to have that in a bike would be pretty darn cool. I can imagine on myself commuting to work and being tired from family life and just hitting the power button and getting there a wee bit faster. I also imagine it as a way to get more people on these contraptions I love.
Here are the videos and motor information below. I look forward to seeing the dope bike come out again this year.

By the way: the Paris-Roubaix is scheduled for April 10th, and will probably be streaming somewhere on the internet.

I believe that this one above is poking fun at the situation.
And one more because it shows the power of this little gadget:
Finally, the company that builds the motor is named GRUBER Antrieb GmbH & Co KG. They are in Austria and Germany. They are geniuses if you ask me. I want to get a bike and ship it to them to retrofit it. All in good time I guess.
Here is the CAD mock up of the motor attached to a Shimano XTR crankset.
Here is a tech video of their product.
