Portland Metro you have a problem
Thursday, March 3rd, 2011Portland Metro you have a problem.
Today on my ride in near this spot there is a Chevron station. The gas there was $3.76/gal. I ride near here along Highway 26. There is a nice bike path along the way, and I usually ride in during rush hour traffic. This always makes me smile.
I always see a lot of cars with one person sitting on the highway barely moving as I pass them on my bike in granny gear (uphill section). Today when I crossed over the highway I waved at the drivers and smiled. I wonder if it got through to them.
They sit in traffic and fume (literally and figuratively) while either my little bike or the MAX train pass them by on the way into Portland. I see this every time, more so during the rain. Which, if you have not heard, it rains here ALOT during winter.
So inefficient.
So much waste.
Sitting in a car on the highway with no way out. By idling there, they are wasting their money, and we are wasting our money building more and more infrastructure to support this stupid idea that we all need a cars to survive in a city that boasts the best bike infrastructure in the country. Wake up.
I look forward to seeing more people ride as the gas prices continue to rise (5$/gal predicted). Not to say this as I hate cars or drivers. I say this because we as a city, country, and planet need to move on from this idea. Heck, I love my Honda Element, but I hate driving it on runs that I can do on one of my bikes. I have even thought about converting it from gas to electric.
There is a tipping point in everything, a 100th monkey if you will.
When is your tipping point? $4/gal, $5/gal, $5.50/gal? more?
Think about it,
Jeremy
